Implied Probability & Converting Odds

How to turn any betting odds into a probability, why it matters, and how to spot when a price is better than the real chance of winning.

Every price a sportsbook posts is a prediction in disguise. Implied probability is the chance of winning that a set of odds represents. Learning to read it is the gateway to every winning strategy - because value only exists when the real probability is higher than the implied one.

The formula

The easiest way is through decimal odds: implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds.

  • Decimal 2.00 → 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50%
  • Decimal 1.50 → 1 ÷ 1.50 = 66.7%
  • Decimal 4.00 → 1 ÷ 4.00 = 25%

For American odds, convert to decimal first, or use: favorites (−) imply |odds| ÷ (|odds| + 100); underdogs (+) imply 100 ÷ (odds + 100).

Why it matters

Suppose a book prices a team at +150 (implied 40%). If you believe - or a sharper market implies - the team really wins 45% of the time, the price is generous: you're getting paid as if they're less likely to win than they actually are. That gap is your edge, the foundation of expected value.

The catch: odds don't add up to 100%

Add the implied probabilities of both sides of a market and you'll get something over 100% - often 104-110%. That extra is the vig. To find the *true* probability the market implies, you have to strip the vig out, which gives you the "no-vig" or fair odds. That is exactly what our No-Vig Fair Odds Calculator and Hold Calculator compute in seconds.

Odds (American)DecimalImplied probability

−1501.6760.0%
−1101.9152.4%
+1202.2045.5%
+2503.5028.6%
The habit to build: whenever you see a price, silently convert it to a probability and ask, "Is the real chance higher or lower than that?" If higher, you may have found value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is implied probability?

It's the probability of winning that a set of betting odds represents. For decimal odds, it's simply 1 divided by the decimal price. A price of 2.00 implies a 50% chance.

Why do the two sides of a bet add up to more than 100%?

The extra amount above 100% is the vig - the sportsbook's built-in margin. Removing it gives the fair, no-vig probabilities that reflect the market's true estimate.
